London Old Docks Historic Pub Tour with Eating Europe Tours

August 10, 2017

You wouldn’t think it but I’ve always found pub crawls to be quite educational. In my early twenties, they taught me that I could indeed keep up with the boys and manage be to fresh-faced and chipper for my retail gig at 9am the next morning. By my late twenties, they taught me that those magical abilities had disappeared. And now, in my thirties they’ve finally taught me something worth sharing at my next dinner party. Some history of the London Docks; yes ladies and gents… I went to a pub crawl, didn’t get smashed and actually learnt something. Early-twenties me would be shocked, surprised and just a little bit impressed, I think.

I’d like to pretend I changed my ways all on my own but that would hardly be plausible. In reality, I have Eating Europe Tours and our very enthusiastic guide Nicole, to thank. We walked, we talked, and we ate and drank more than enough during this four hour experience… it was filled with lots of fun facts and stories about a part of London I don’t know well at all so the time literally flew by! We started our tour somewhere in Rotherhithe looking out onto one part of the Thames, ended down by St Katherine’s Dock, looking out onto another part of it… and saw a lot along the way. Here’s what you can expect if you decide to join the London Old Docks Historic Pub Tour…

Coach & Horses, Clapham – A Cosy Neighbourhood Pub

June 1, 2017

Despite what some of a certain someone’s friends joke, the only thing that’s really changed about him since we got together are his dining habits. He came to me pre-loaded with those itchy feet for travel, a reasonably good dress sense, and some annoying quirks which I won’t get into now. I suspect he was always into fine dining and know he already loved a splash of wine, but back in the BC (before Connie) days, dining out was mainly about the meat and two veg, raucous Irish pubs, and grotty old-school boozers where everyone’s a regular and the staff know your order.

It’s something I imagined the Coach & Horses, a charming neighbourhood pub in Clapham, would have been before they gave it a facelift, brought in the craft beers by the barrel-load, and flung out made-to-order pizzas from the kitchen. Turns out, I was right. It was exactly that kind of pub; what I hadn’t anticipated was that a certain someone could confirm it from personal experience. It wasn’t just the sort of pub he used to go to a lot, it was actually a pub he did used to go to for a couple of pints and some football! Obviously, I had to drag him back for a compare and contrast exercise…

Drinks On Me This Valentine’s Day

February 12, 2015

“Hey, I’ll buy you a drink.”

I’m sure this is a sentence we’ve all uttered many times before and secretly, or not so secretly, look forward to hearing!

Somewhere along the line, the gesture of buying someone a drink became good social etiquette. I’m not sure how but I’m not complaining. In my time as a sensible consumer of alcohol I’ve bought many drinks to say anything you’d find on a Hallmark card- thank you, I’m sorry, happy birthday, congratulations, sorry you’re leaving… And for every drink I’ve bought someone, I’ve easily received my fair share back so it’s one big happy cycle. Nothing beats a drink with friends and now with the new app One From Me you can send a drink to your friends wherever they are in the UK, for whatever reason.
